Example Argumantative Speech (Basic)

 PRESERVATION ELEPHANT
By Natsumi Shota (a friend from Japan)

Today, there are a lot of endangered animals in the world. While I’m talking to you right now talk, the number of some species is decreasing. Why are they being endangered? And how to prevent them from extinction? I want to talk about these matters in my project.

First, I’m going to talk about endangered animals except elephants. I chose manatees. There are three species of manatees; the Amazonian manatee, the West Indian manatee, and the West African manatee. Manatees are large, fully aquatic mammals. Manatees are gentle and slow-moving animals. Most of their time is spent eating, resting, and traveling. They mostly have no natural enemies. The natural causes of death are stress or diseases.

Then why manatees are endangered? It is related to human activity, such as habitat destruction and human objects. Their slow-moving has led to many violent collisions with propeller-driven boats and ship. All these species of manatee are listed by the world conservation union as vulnerable to extinction. To protect manatees, some countries supervise them by law. For example, the West Indian manatees in the United States are protected under federal law. And in the world, official club or organization try to rescue and do rehabilitation for a manatee. For example, Save the Manatee Club. Their mission is to protect endangered manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations. Their objective is the recovery and protection of manatees and their aquatic ecosystem. They have three goals to recover manatee population. The first goal is to protect healthy habitat to support a stable or growing manatee population. The second goal is to reduce manatee harassment, injuries, and deaths from human activity. The third goal is to ensure that sufficient regulations have been adopted to accomplish these goals. In order to accomplish their objective and goals, they do four things. The first is increasing public awareness and education. The second is sponsoring research, rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts. The third is advocating for strong protection measures, such as boat speed zones and sanctuaries. The fourth is taking legal action when appropriate. The survey in January 2014 shows that there are at least 4,831 manatees in Florida. Since the surveys started in 1991, the number of manatees counted during the surveys had increased. Because of the conservation, manatee population is increasing. It is related to improve survey techniques, increase knowledge of where manatees aggregate, and a growing population.
Second, I’m going to talk about elephants in Malaysia. Before talking about the elephants in detail, I want to talk about the importance of preserving wildlife animals. If we do not protect an animal, what will happen to them and the ecosystem? Wild animals will become extinct and it will lead to the destruction of the ecosystem. Of course, the destruction of ecosystem affects a human being. For example, food shortage. If the animal extinct, the plant and the other animals which are related to this animal will be affected. And the number of these plants or other animal will be changing. If the number of them is decreasing, a human being can’t get enough food.
So, the extinction of animal brings bad influences to a human being finally. And in the worst case, human beings may extinct. Therefore, it is important to raise public awareness. I know this reason is a thing by the human ego. However, this is the truth.
Then I want to think about elephants in Malaysia. In Malaysia, there are 2,351-3,066 wild elephants. And now elephants in Peninsular Malaysian are listed as a critically endangered species. Why do they become endangered species? It is related to human activity. The human tries to cut down trees and make the big plantation area for the development. However, it causes the habitat loss of elephants. Then elephants are forced to find food in areas surrounding forest such as plantation. Finally, human kill elephants to save themselves. From these reasons, elephants become endangered species. But, the elephants play an important role. For example, the elephant creates natural pathways by knocking over trees. Protecting the elephants help to safeguard thousands of other species within its habitat. So how can we  preserve the elephants in Malaysia? There is a conservation center; NECC. NECC has translocation team. And this team translocates elephant from dangerous plantation area to safe area. They do not only translocation of an elephant but also educating local farmers and people who visit this center. And they try to raise public awareness. By raising public awareness, it can help to prevent the extinction of elephants. Because local farmer can understand that elephants don’t want to harm the human, they’re forced to go to the farm area. Furthermore, some people may give them the donation.
Finally, I’ m going to give my opinion about keeping the elephant in the sanctuaries. I don’t agree with this idea. I have two reasons. First, keeping the elephant in the sanctuaries makes elephants stressful. To translocate elephants safely, we use anesthesia gun and chain them. It may cause mental health problem to them or narrow their life. Second, we can’t preserve many elephants in the sanctuaries. To translocate them or keep them in conservation center costs too much. So we preserve only limited elephants. Moreover, unless we stop deforestation, elephant’s habitat continues to lose and many elephants go to the plantation area. Therefore, I think keeping the elephant in the sanctuaries is not the best way.

To preserve endangered animals is important for both of animal and human being. However, unless we improve the basic reason, this situation does not change. Only keeping animals in the preservation center is not enough to solve this problem. I think we have to educate people and raise public awareness. And the posture that is going to know this problem is important. So let’s try to search for endangered species. This posture becomes one step to solve this problem.
